Tiny Home in Japan: Split-Levels, Smart Views and Space-Conscious Design

All in all, 40 square meters of space isn’t a lot to work with, and it feels even more constrained when you have additional building restrictions that restrict the actual built-up area. This is where Tiny Homes come to your rescue with smart design and innovative floor plan. House in Shukugawa designed by FujiwaraMuro Architects is one such efficient and modern space-conscious small home where every inch of the offering has been maximized to the max. Away from the more traditional floor plan, the home features bedrooms and bathrooms on the lower level and the living area, kitchen and dining room on the upper level.

The real highlight here is the design of the open plan living area with a split level that makes the small area feel much larger than it really is. Large windows bring ample natural light into the kitchen with smart reading zones, workspaces and sitting areas that take advantage of most of the green views in different directions. The split-level floor plan also allows residents to enjoy quality family time, although semi-private workspaces and relaxation zones are available if needed. It’s a home that feels different in more ways than one! [Photography: Naoki Yoshikawa]

In the densely built-up districts of Osaka, this type of long, narrow lot is common… In Osaka, however, building coverage area (BCA) and area ratio (FAR) regulations are lenient, allowing a relatively large percentage of a given lot to be built on. In contrast, in Shukugawa District of Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture (just west of Osaka), BCA is limited to 40 percent and FAR to 100 percent
