10 of the best organic baby and toddler snacks

age suitability – It is recommended to start weaning - and introducing solid foods - around the 6th month. Choosing to introduce snacks is a matter of personal preference, but you should look at individual products for age suitability. These are included as certain textures may not be suitable for younger babies who have just started weaning.

Ingredients - Check the packaging to see what's in the snacks and see if you can spot the main ingredients at the top of the list (they're always ranked by weight). We recommend looking for snacks that are low in salt, sugar, and additives with a list of ingredients that isn't too long.

texture – Ideally, if you're grabbing snacks on the go, you don't want anything too crumbly or sticky that needs a few baby wipes to clean up. Our testers tried the snacks in our round-up in everyday life and judge how messy they really are!

Check out our picks of the best organic snacks for babies and toddlers:

1. Mamia Organic Strawberry & Apple Soft Oaty Bars, £1.39 for 6

– Best snack bar

Suitable for: 12 months+ | Forgive: Gold - Baby and Toddler Snacks, MadeForMums Awards 2021

Suitable for toddlers from 12 months, this fruity snack consists of soft rolled oats, raisin paste with apple and strawberry concentrate. They were a hit with our toddler testers thanks to their sweet taste, which comes from naturally occurring sugars in the fruit. They are similar to a flapjack, but are a little softer.

MFM tester Blaise, mother of twins, liked their convenient size, which was small enough to slip into her diaper bag. Plus, they come in an even pack of 6 which is ideal for sharing between 2 siblings. She added, "It was a relief to have something healthy on hand to feed my twins a day and not feel guilty for not making anything homemade."

Tester Lucy, mother of 2, found the texture took a little getting used to for her toddler. She said: "The texture is quite dry so it can be a bit difficult to swallow. But my son has now gotten used to the texture so he can now chew and swallow efficiently. I've started breaking them up into more bite-sized pieces rather than allowing him to bite chunks out."

Available from: Aldi

2. Little Freddie Organic Cheese & Tomato Super Seeds Tubes, £2.50 for 4 x 16g packs

– Best for a nutritious snack

Suitable for: 12 months+ | Forgive: Silver - Baby & Toddler Snacks, MadeForMums Awards 2021

Made with flaxseed, kidney beans, broad beans and British quinoa, these crispy organic tubes are packed with flavor as well as key nutrients like protein, iron, zinc and fiber, all of which contribute to a healthy immune system.

Not only do they contain a range of seeds and grains, but they are flavored with organic cheese and organic tomatoes, which keeps them from being too dry and gives them a spicier taste. They have a good crunch but they don't melt on the tongue so are not suitable for children under 12 months. Unlike other similar snacks, we didn't find them too messy either. Home tester Katie, mum of 14 months, said: "I love the texture, the clean approach and they are perfect for on the go.

Registered Nutritionist Clare Thornton-Wood added: "They have really interesting and distinctive flavors and we could definitely taste the seeds. A useful snack on its own or for dipping in vegetable or meat sauces.” Although they're on the higher end of the price range, she also praised them for having “a good number of tubes in each pack” with no breakage.

Available from: Sainsbury's and Ocado

3. Organix Gruffalo Biscuits, Cocoa & Vanilla, £2.50 for 5 x 20g packs

– Best for a delicious taste

Suitable for: 12 months+

Little Gruffalo fans will love these cookies from organic baby food brand Organix, shaped like Julia Donaldson's beloved character.

Made with flour and grape juice concentrate and flavored with cocoa powder and vanilla extract, they're a sweet treat for little ones without containing alarming levels of refined sugar (the only sugar they contain is naturally occurring). Adults can even vouch for their glorious chocolate and vanilla flavor!

They come in multi-packs of 5 and while the packs aren't resealable, something tells us the cookies won't last very long once they reach your little one's hands.

Available from: Tesco and Sainsbury's

4. Mamia Organic Carrot Puffs, 39p per 20g sachet

- Best price performance ratio

Suitable for: 7 months+ | Forgive: Bronze - Baby and Toddler Snacks, MadeForMums Awards 2021

With no added sodium, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, these crispy Orange Carrot Puffs are just the right size for little hands. Flavorful and tastier, the crunchy snacks are affordable for parents (just 39p for 20g) and a healthy snacking option. They even contain extra vitamin B1 which promotes your baby's growth and development.

You get a well-stocked bag, making it a great snack when your baby or toddler is out in the stroller. Unfortunately, the pack is not resealable, but our little tester thought it was so tasty that he cleaned it up right away.

Home tester Sarah, mother of a 14 month old, agreed: “I think they represent really good value for money and are a lot cheaper than similar products. They're crunchy but easy to eat (my tester only has six teeth!).”

Available from: Aldi

5. Organix Melty Veggie Sticks, 70p for 15g

Best for minimal ingredients

Suitable for: 7 months+

These vegetable sticks are made with corn and dried green beans and flavored with tomato. They have a small list of ingredients, the main thing being organic corn with green peas, tomatoes and sweetcorn added for flavor.

They don't get too messy with little fingers as they aren't covered in flavor like some snacks, although little testers might find them less boldly flavored than other options on the market for that reason. They can also still be prone to getting a little mushy depending on how little your eater is.

Home tester Raegan said: "They would be good for a baby just beginning weaning or starting finger foods! They learn to eat and have something delicious to snack on!”

We like that they're gluten-free and a great on-the-go option, but our testers commented that a resealable bag would be handy.

Available from: Boots, Ocado and Sainsbury's

6. Organix Mini Organic Raisin Fruit Snack Boxes Multipack, £2.25 for 12 packs

- Best for a sweet treat

Suitable for: 12 months+

When you're looking for a sweet treat that's just the right size for little fingers, raisins are a great compromise between healthy veggies and delicious, yet so nutritious, sweets. Although naturally high in sugar, they have a higher nutritional value than sweeter treats and are also a source of fiber for your little ones.

These little boxes are ideal for tucking into diaper bags, and little eaters will enjoy digging out the raisins from their boxes.

Available from: Sainsbury's, Ocado and Amazon

7. Ella's Kitchen Organic Carrot and Sweet Potato Rice Cake, £1 for 40g

– Best for adding toppings

Suitable for: 7 months +

Not too messy and great for young gums to suck on, rice cakes are a great snacking option, especially when you're on the go. They're also a great base for nutritious toppings — from peanut butter to hummus to cream cheese and raisins — to boost your little one's nutrient intake while snacking.

Ella's Kitchen Organic Rice Cakes with Carrots and Sweet Potatoes are made with organic rice, millet and quinoa, and dried sweet potatoes and carrots. The ingredient list is simple and straightforward, and they taste delightfully sweet despite the minimal sugar content.

They're also great finger food for little ones learning to use the pincer motion, but they're tasty enough to delight more grown-up toddlers too. Also, it can take a while for them to be eaten. So if you need to run errands or need to keep your child busy, these are an excellent option.

A word of warning, these can get a little messy as they are covered in an orange layer so keep your wipes handy to wipe your little one's mouth afterwards!

Available from: Ocado, Morrisons and Amazon

8. Kiddylicious Veggie Straws, £6 for 10 x 12g packs

– Best for a generous size

Suitable for: 9 months +

Kiddylicious offers a wide range of sweet and savory snacks for little eaters, but these sticky veggie straws come highly recommended.

With a crunchy texture, these hollow snacks don't have the strongest flavor — which practically means they're not too messy either — but they're tasty and something my toddler keeps coming back to.

Featuring tomato powder, kale powder, spinach powder, and beetroot powder, the ingredient list is simple and minimal. Due to the vegetable content, the straws also have different colors, which is fun for little eaters.

At 60p a pack, they're not as expensive as some snacks and we found them to be good value with a well-stocked pack that took our little tester a while to get through.

Available from: Asda and Okado

9. Piccolo Mighty Oaty Bar Carrot & Orange Bars, £2.95 for 6 bars

– Best Free From Snack

Suitable for: 1 year+

Made with gluten-free oats, these snack bars are also dairy-free and vegan, making them suitable for a range of different diets. They have a delicious combination of ingredients like apple, carrot, cinnamon and orange and are the perfect size for on the go.

The bars are high in fiber, so nutritious and tasty. However, note that their texture is more suitable for toddlers over 1 year old.

Available from: Okado and Amazon
