1. A leader listens.

Good leadership requires great listening skills, even in families. Too often people associate leadership with being in charge and shouting out orders. Good listening is also key to good communication and trust, which builds relationships over time.

2. A leader has a vision.

The Bible says where there is no vision, people perish. Good leaders are visionaries who learn from the past, understand the present, and look to the future to develop a vision of where to go and what to do. Parenting is a great example of the importance of instilling vision in the hearts of our children. A clear vision inspires others by making a goal seem important, worthwhile, and achievable.

3. A leader adapts.

In the search for a vision, the unexpected always happens. When the only constant in life is change, then it's important for leaders to expect the unexpected. In marriage, a couple who learns to embrace change and deal with the blows can truly embrace life's realities, build trust, and live their story together. It is crucial for parents to expect and adapt to the unexpected in order to make their child feel safe and unconditionally loved.

4. A leader delegates.

For people struggling with control, sometimes our default attitude is to just do it all ourselves. But I've learned over the years that I need to train and trust others to do what I might be able to do but probably should let someone else do. A team accomplishes much more when the leader doesn't bear the burden of doing everything alone.

5. A leader serves.

Jesus told his closest followers that if they were to be considered great by God and others, they must first learn to serve all. This is the most important characteristic of leadership. When leaders seek to serve rather than be served, their ability to listen, vision, adapt, and delegate improves. Why? Because the people around the leader know that they are cared for and important and that they have an inherent dignity. When leaders serve others, others are grateful and serve out of love, not just obedience or fear. Don't we want that in our families too?
