7 Call-and-Response Ideas to Reinforce Health & Safety

"Too close!" “Fix your mask!” “Get hand sanitizer!” How many times a day do you remind kids about pandemic protocols? Keeping the masks properly on the children's faces and keeping them at a distance is a serious challenge, especially in the primary school classes. Cue call and answer. It's a proven strategy used by educators around the world. Active response strategies like these can be used to reinforce, remind, or redirect students throughout the school day.

Call-and-response is easy when students respond together when prompted by the teacher's "call." So after repeating ourselves a million times an hour (you know how it is), we came up with these pandemic-themed call-and-response chants to make it a little easier (and fun!) to stay safe to keep on everyone's lips.

Educator Angela Watson also suggests asking your students to make up their own:

This takes five minutes and can be a great back to school activity or something to do after a holiday break to build a sense of community and get kids ready to study again.

Have students work in pairs or small groups to create a list of call-and-response methods they would like to use and narrow the list down to their five best. Let them present you with the list for final selection. You can have the class vote on what they like best, or take a bunch of suggestions from the kids and try a new one every month or so.
