7 Morning Routines for Teachers - WeAreTeachers

A teacher's day starts early. There isn't much time to relax in the morning before school starts. But even if you only have a few minutes, there are some easy ways to start your day off on the right foot. If it feels meaningful, intentional, and consistent, it will make a difference. Here are seven morning routines for teachers that take 10 minutes or less.

1. Do you have ten minutes? move your body

Since the teachers are on their feet, you're already getting into your steps. However, start your day with a little exercise to boost your energy. Yoga and stretching is a favorite morning workout for teachers because it allows you to focus on yourself, calm your mind, and prepare you for the day ahead. If you want to break a sweat We've marked this six-minute workout video as one of our favorite videos, so be sure to check them out Teacher tips for more ideas.

2. Do you have eight minutes? write it out

Clearing your head first can make a big difference in how the rest of the day goes. Journaling doesn't mean you have to write a lot or that it has to be amazing (or even grammatically correct!). It's an opportunity for you to write down what you notice and how you feel. We love Julia Cameron's Morning Pages from The Artist's Way. Write down everything that comes to mind...from reminders to pick up the dry cleaners to why you became a teacher. Another popular morning writing exercise is that of Laurie Wagner wild writing. Read a poem and then choose a jumping line. Start your journal with this line and repeat it every time you feel stuck.

3. Do you have six minutes? to have breakfest

For teachers, breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day. My typical lunch consisted of spooning yogurt into my mouth while standing in front of the copier. Sometimes I managed to eat two Luna bars! So eating well for breakfast made a big difference in my energy levels. I love bagging and freezing smoothie ingredients. Another favorite? Ms. It teacher approved Recipe for overnight oats.

4. Do you have four minutes? Write down three things

Check your calendar or get out your planner and decide what's non-negotiable today. What Has to do during the school day that you want to prioritize? Write these items down to help you feel in control of your to-do list.

5. Do you have two minutes? make your bed

If you want to start the day off feeling good and productive, make your bed. It doesn't take long and clearing the outside mess can help you feel calmer. That's what she found out when Gretchen Rubin, the happiness expert, was doing research for her book make the bed was the one habit that made people happiest.

6. Do you have a minute? Feel grateful

Before you jump out of bed and take on all those things, stop for a minute and think about what you're grateful for. It could be little things: hot coffee that you didn't have to microwave three times, a student's funny joke that made everyone laugh, or a canceled faculty meeting. Think about the big things too: your health, your family, and your students.

7. Do you have thirty seconds? drinking water

When we wake up we haven't had water for hours. Drink a glass of water to stay hydrated and feel more energized for the day. Try to put off the coffee until after. I know. Easier said than done! Then enjoy your coffee and happy teaching!

Creating a morning routine that works for you doesn't mean every morning will go as planned. Maybe you overslept or caught a cold or your kids were up all night. That's why we've designed this list so that you can choose based on how much time you have.
