Anglepoise®️: The Quintessence of Great British Design

A venerable lighting institution, Anglepoise®️ is the quintessence of great British design. The company's original 1227™ light was released in 1935. A groundbreaking triumph, it introduced the brand's constant spring technology and is widely regarded as the archetypal Anglepoise®️ luminary. A relevant, modern and timeless design icon, the classic profile, anthropomorphic attitude and precise manner of the Original 1227™ describes a luminaire full of character and poise.

George Carwardine and the Original 1227™

Herbert Terry and Sons was a family business founded in 1855 whose innovative 'constant tension' springs spurred engineer George Carwardine (1887 – 1947) to develop an articulated work lamp. Carwardine was fascinated by spring and lever based mechanisms and in 1932 presented his striking invention of the 4 spring lamp. Thanks to its patented constant spring mechanism, this innovative lamp combines freedom of movement with perfect balance. In 1934 Carwardine licensed his design to Terry and soon after registered the name Anglepoise®️. At this point, Carwardine's Model 1208™ 4-spring light went into mass production. Together with the designers at Terry, Carwardine reworked the lamp's industrial 4-spring design and adapted it to the domestic consumer market base. Type 75™

For a few years, Anglepoise®️ seemed to have receded into the background, finally regaining its rightful attention and notoriety in the 2000s. The brand's newfound confidence was no doubt aided by a collaboration with Kenneth Grange, celebrated British industrial products designer and Anglepoise®️ Design Director. Grange designed the remarkable Type 75™ in 2004 after being invited by Terry to redesign the Model 75, a prototype designed by George Carawardine over 70 years ago (Source: Design Museum). Grange's Type75™ is a particular favorite with designers and architects (and writers too). A pretty model with a modernist look combined with graceful, flowing lines.

Giants

In 2005, Anglepoise®️ was asked by the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Center to produce a giant version of the Original 1227™ lamp (the Original 1227™ was used by Dahl in his writing hut). A truly creative and ambitious statement piece, the Original 1227™ Giant Floor Lamp attracted a lot of attention and is now in series production.

Vogue collaborations

In 2014, Anglepoise®️ collaborated with British fashion designer Paul Smith to produce a clever rendition of Kenneth Grange's Type 75™ in the fashionista's distinctive inking handprint.

Following the success of Edition One, Anglepoise®️ collaborated again with Paul Smith in 2015 to produce a second edition of Kenneth Grange's Type 75™. With a deeper, richer color palette, Type 75™ Edition Two has a polished urban appeal that sets it apart from the carefree and summery Edition One.

Anglepoise®️ has teamed up with contemporary British fashion designer Margaret Howell to add several alluring colors to the Type 75™ range. A constant advocate for the brand, Howell admires Anglepoise®️'s penchant for simplicity, functionality, authenticity and timelessness, qualities inherent in their own designs.

Studio

Playing with color and scale, Anglepoise®️ introduced Studio, a scaled-down version of the original 1227™. The Studio Edition offers thirty-eight color combinations, ranging from no-frills minimal tones to undisguised color cacophony.
