DIY Fall Wooden Crates for the Perfect Porch Decor

Designing the perfect porch decoration is a must for any homeowner, and one of the best times of year to do this is fall. There is nothing quite like walking down the street and seeing pumpkins, haystacks and beautiful flowers that are there for everyone. But creating a visually interesting porch display can take some effort, so at Decoist we want to make it easier for you with these DIY wooden boxes fall. Not only are they easy to build, but they add height and dimension to your porch. As an added bonus, they can be moved inside for the winter and double as storage.

supply list:

1. 12 pieces of framing wood - 1 inch x 3 inches
   • Cut six of these to 24" lengths and the other six to 10" lengths
2. 4 pieces hobby wood - 1" x 2" cut to 9 1/4" length
3. 1 rough pine board or shelf - 12" x 24".
4. Sandpaper - 60 and 80 grit
5. Your choice of stain or color – we chose Minwax in espresso
6. WOOD FINISH - We love the Minwax Ployurethane in clear satin
7. Acrylic colors of your choice
8. paint brush
9. Nail Gun / Nailer
10. 1 inch brad nails

Step 1:

Cut your pieces of wood to the right length and sand down any rough edges of your wood with an 80 grit sandpaper. We've provided the ratios we've used, but you can trim them to the length you want.

Pro tip: If you don't have a table or miter saw, go to your local hardware store and get the lumber you need. If necessary, ask the staff to cut them for you.

Step 2:

Next, use two scraps of wood to create a 90 degree angle gauge. This creates a framework that allows you to place the other pieces of wood correctly. Place your first 10 inch lumber at the top corner of the frame. Place a piece of wood or other spacer next to the 10 inch piece and add another underneath. Continue doing this until you have lined up three 10 inch pieces.

Step 3:

Create a side brace. Take your 9 1/4 piece of wood and slide it along the top of the 10 inch pieces. Nail them in place with 1 inch brad nails. For an extra secure finish, place two nails for each piece. Now that you have a small pallet, repeat the same process to make the other side piece.

Step 4:

Now it's time to take your 24 inch long pieces of wood to connect the side pallets. Adjust the 24" board with a 10" piece and nail it in place. Once you have it attached, flip the board over and attach it to your other small pallet. Finally, make a crate by nailing the last 324 inch planks of wood to the floor. Now you should have a bottomless box.

Step 5:

Make the base. Sand the 12" x 24" panel with 3M sandpaper, then seal with Minwax Ployurethance in Clear Satin. Then you can paint the board in the color of your choice. We went for a beautiful burgundy and mustard yellow palette.

Pro tip: For a more rustic look, try our scratch painting technique. Using a piece of 60 grit sandpaper, scrape into the paint surface until the natural wood grain and color comes through.

Step 6:

Stain the wood of your boxes. We used Minwax's Espresso stain, but feel free to use whatever works best with your porch decor.

Step 7:

Attach the base by placing it on your crate, varnish side down. Line up the corners and secure using your nail gun and 1 inch brad nails. Now that it's done, it's time to set up your porch decor!

You can change the dimensions of the pieces of wood to create different sized wooden boxes, or make several of the same size.
