Whether you're new to the houseplant revolution or have been a lifelong gardener, you know a Vintage hanging wall planter can completely transform a room. Sure, plants are great when they're on a shelf or on the floor, but adding some height allows for better visual display. However, you don't have to be a skilled carpenter to build your own planter box out of wooden pallets. With a few simple woodcuts, some glue, and a stain of your choice, you have a brand new vintage wall planter that could easily retail for over $100.

supply list:

1. 6 pieces of wood - 2.5 inch x 3/4 inch
2. 3 pieces of wood - 1 inch x 2.5 inches
3. wood glue/carpenter's glue
4. Brad Nails
5. Sandpaper - This pack from 3M contains both the 60 and 120 grit you need
6. Woodstain - we used Varathane woodstain in the color Kona for the main palette and the color Rose for the planter boxes
7. Clear Coat Spray Finish - We used Tremclad Clear Satin Rust Paint but Krylon Rust Protector is a great alternative
8. Decorative upholstery pins

Tool List:

1. miter saw
2. Brad Nagler
3. Palm or hand sander
4. Foam stain brush

Step 1:

Make the palette background. Start by cutting 6 pieces of wood about 3 feet long and 2 pieces of wood about 2 ½ feet long with a miter saw. Sand all parts with a 60 grit block of sandpaper to get the rough edges out and then with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth them out completely.

Pro tip: Look for wood with more knots for an extra vintage feel

Step 2:

Once the wood is sanded and dust free, prep the wood with Varathane clear spray and then stain the pallet pieces. We chose the Varathane wood stain in the color Kona. Be sure to sand all sides of the wood pieces as some will show! Use a foam brush and wipe away any excess with a clean rag.

Pro tip: the longer you let the stain sit, the better it will hold.

Step 3:

Cut the wood for your vintage planter boxes.

• (2) 14″ long pieces for the base and face of the largest box
• (2) 8.5″ long pieces for the base and face of the middle box
• (2) 5 ¼ inch long pieces for the bottom and front of the small box

The ends of each box will need (2) 3″ long pieces for the ends of the boxes. Once all the pieces of wood are cut, simply glue along the edges and build a three sided box. Once the glue is dry, go ahead and color the box. We used the Varathane Rose Wood Stain.

Step 4:

Now take your long pallet pieces, lay them down and organize them in an unbalanced pattern or however you like best. Make it your own! Once you've decided on the look of the back pallet, glue the pieces together. Then glue three 18 inch long pieces of wood for the back supports. You can use nails for extra support if you like.

Step 5:

When you have your board assembled and your boxes assembled, the last step is to glue the boxes. Use a zigzag pattern for the glue and let it dry overnight for extra hold.

Step 6:

Finally, we used some beautiful decorative upholstery pins to add extra shine to the top and bottom of each piece of wood.

Step 7:
