Mulaney also shared when he was “hardest bonding” with his newborn son and what life is like as a new dad
Comedian John Mulaney hosted this weekend Saturday night live, which marked an impressive professional achievement: entry into the show’s Five-Timers Club. But it wasn’t the fact that Mulaney was officially added to the exclusive list of SNL Host, this was an outstanding experience on his visit. It was the most recent monumental milestone in his personal life – the birth of his first child, Malcolm.
Following the show’s opening tribute to Ukraine on February 26, Mulaney performed his monologue, which touched on the major changes in his personal life since his last appearance SNL‘s stage. These included an intervention, a stint in rehab, splitting from his drug dealer and welcoming baby Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney with his girlfriend Olivia Munn in November.
“Life is much better and happier now. I have a 12-week-old son,” Mulaney explained. “He’s a pretty cool guy for someone who can’t vote. His legs are like little calzones and I want to eat them.”
Mulaney then shared that the first time he was officially “hardest” with his son was right after Malcolm’s birth, while the new family of three was still in the delivery room. He got his first taste of the newborn’s personality when the nurses brought the little guy to the warmer.
“They put the warmer on him under that big bright light and the light just shines in his eyes,” Mulaney said. “He just looks up at the light and… it was him upset, but he said nothing. I thought, ‘This is my son.’ A polite man in an awkward situation, but he won’t make a fuss.”
Mulaney also described watching his little boy learn the first of many hard life lessons when Malcolm’s favorite pacifier was recently recalled. After learning of the report, all of Malcolm’s prized binkies that the family had at the home were quickly collected and placed in a basket on the counter, which Mulaney says Malcolm quickly spotted.
“I see this look in his eyes all the time, like, ‘I want to use these but I can’t because they might kill me,'” he says while imitating his son’s fight. He added, “Welcome to my world Homey.”
The last time Mulaney hosted SNLIt was Halloween 2020 and his life looked a little different. He was struggling with a drug addiction and fresh out of rehab, about to unknowingly return after his friends, including Seth Meyers, staged an intervention. He had also separated from his six-year-old wife, Anna Marie Tendler.
Mulaney always said he was on the kid-free stretch, so many thoughts swarming over his French bulldog, Petunia, were as close as fans would get to seeing the comedian’s paternal side. But now Mulaney is a baby-carrying dad eating his son’s leg rolls, and we have to say it suits him well.
Mulaney previously joked that he looks like a kid dressing up while wearing a suit. But on Saturday he looked more like a proud new dad – holding his precious baby in an oversized suit of his own. (Or, as Munn described it on Instagram, “looks like your uncle being carried from a wedding because he was too tough.”)
