it will not be forgotten

AAll of our five children are now in school or working. We taught them many life lessons, but what will be remembered? Before they left our nest, there were 4 things Susan and I taught them to always remember. Here you are:

1. Remember who you are – your identity

So many people spend much of their lives trying to determine their identity. They are constantly struggling and trying to create and recreate their identities by behaving, how they look, what they wear, what they drive, where they live and what they have because they have no idea who they are and how valuable they are. You don’t have to do this because God has given you your identity and worth. You were created and chosen by God. You are wonderfully made.

When I was young it was very important to me to get the approval of other people. For example, when I was speaking publicly, I would always think things like, “Do you like what I’m saying? Do you like how I say it? What do you think of me?” I focused on myself and sought approval from others. As I learned to take the focus off of myself, fear of what other people thought and fear of making mistakes were replaced with the freedom to be the person God created me to be. God does not want us to seek the approval, approval and applause of others. He wants us to look to only one audience for everything, God Almighty…and do all we can to please, glorify, and honor Him alone. Their purpose in life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

3. Remember how you should live – your life

God tells us that the most important thing we can do is love him and others. Jesus also says, “If you love me, you will obey what I command” (John 14:15). One of His commandments is to read and ponder His Word. My favorite passage in the Bible is Psalm 1:1-3, which says: “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and he meditates on his law day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in due time and whose leaves never wither. What he does thrives.” What an encouraging thing! As I delight in God and His Word, and as I read and ponder it, God will have His hand of favor upon my life in a way I never dreamed!

As you continue on your life journey, you will make more and more decisions that will profoundly affect and influence you for the rest of your life here on earth. The Bible will give you the wisdom you need to make decisions that honor God.

4. Remember what God has promised you – your reward

I can’t wait to go to heaven! The older I get, the more I think about it and look forward to the joy we will experience in the presence of God. God loves you and He has plans to bring you prosperity, hope and a future. God has plans to bless you and reward you richly for what you have done and what you will do for His glory here on earth.
