There are many directions you can take when planning a home renovation. For some, renovation is just an aesthetic need. But for those who live in aging homes from yesteryear, smart modern renovation is a necessity; even lifesavers! It breathes new life into an otherwise uncomfortable and dark apartment. Project Nymph in Melbourne, Australia falls into the latter category, as Zen Architects have transformed an old single-fronted terraced house in the city’s famed Botanic Gardens neighborhood into a bold, dashing modern home perfect for the busy city dweller.

As is usual with most of these historic homes Down Under (literally), the street frontage of the home has remained largely unchanged and the old residence has been merged with a new kitchen and dining area that opens onto the patio outside. On the inside, the color palette moves away from the usual white and blue trend, with dark greys, black and an undeniable touch of masculinity taking over. The home has a sophisticated feel yet brings together a variety of contrasting textures and with that there is also a touch of industrial modern appeal that makes it even more adorable!

A large wooden pergola was added to shade the outdoor patio area and also provide sun protection for the indoor space. A beautiful wooden staircase and plenty of natural light complete a stunning renovation that feels energetic, exquisite and unique. [Photography: Derek Swalwell]
