Adding new structure to an old home is always a task that requires both care and precision. It is important to reconcile aesthetics with ergonomics and at the same time ensure that old and new find a place next to each other. It’s the same with ruby, a refurbished suburban Melbourne home originally built in the 1950s by CC Sainsbury for assisted veterans. In its new form, the home perfectly meets the needs of a modern family as a new second floor extension remodels the interior with a new kitchen, dining area, children’s bedrooms and study. However, the conversion carried out by Foomann Architects complements the existing old brick and wood structure perfectly.

The elegant second floor is clad in corten panels while the lower level maintains its brick presence. Large glass windows, skylights and an open design provide ample natural light, while corridors efficiently connect the spaces. Inside, storage units, shelving and concealed wardrobes maximize space with ease, while the old home and new extension seem to flow effortlessly into one another. A perfect example of modern renovation paying homage to the old! [Photography: Willem-Dirk du Toit]

While neighbors to the north and west contain overbearing homes; The east has a well-kept garden. Views are managed through window placement and perforated screens. An east-facing window at the top of the staircase sits at the apex of the new volume and frames a mature silver birch creating the key view from both floors. The sloping volumes of the extension overlap in the middle of the children’s rooms, where triangular windows let in light and sky.
