Creating the perfect downtown family home is about finding the delicate balance between space, privacy and a sense of openness that still invites natural ventilation indoors. Designed on a cramped 147 square meter lot in RichmondMelbourne, the T2 residence by fyc architects achieves all this and much more with a design that combines country favorites with modernity and a healthy dose of wood! Borrowing from the neighborhood’s traditional workers’ cottages and adding a touch of industrial charm to the converted warehouses that are beginning to dominate Melbourne’s suburbs, the new home feels spacious, elegant and at times even minimal.

Glass and metal elements are carefully intertwined with the wooden planks used to create the home’s private facade. Step inside and things feel a lot more modern, with a neutral color scheme anchored in gray and white, broken only by yellow and blue accents. It feels fresh and invigorating at every turn, although black wood slats and a unique staircase design that lets in natural light give the home an identity of its own. The backyard feels safe and tranquil, with the rooftop deck providing an additional option for outdoor lounging.

The design-of-the-stairwell-also-brings-lots-of-natural-light — The design of the stairs also brings in plenty of natural light

Its facade is a play on the features of the cottage that was typical of the area and the cottage that occupied the site. Its recessed entrance porch contrasts with the typical porch experience of the corrugated roof extension, while the typically recessed single-wing window has now been lengthened and brought forward by the sheet steel border.
