Unsurprisingly, most classic homes that have stayed the same for a while or have been poorly renovated over the past few decades now need a modern makeover that will infuse them with freshness. And many of these homes come to us from Down Under, with historic Victorian and Edwardian homes in cities like Melbourne and Sydney topping the list. Today we head to a beautifully renovated Edwardian residence in Weatherboard Camberwell, a busy Melbourne suburb, looking for inspirational ideas that we can adopt as well. And rest assured there’s a lot to learn from this makeover by Warc Studio Architects!

The living area was the focus of the extension and renovation project, which also affected the bathrooms, wardrobes, the landscape and the pool area. A new movable rear wooden shade is now the center of attention as its versatile presence controls natural light, adding an elegant aesthetic and functional addition to the home. The screens also extend to provide shelter for the outdoor patio and gathering area, while an open living room with kitchen and dining area that flows into the patio greets homeowners inside.

A visual connection with the back garden is maintained at all times as the custom wood decor transforms into different pieces in different rooms of the living area to hide any clutter. Several sustainable measures were taken in this project, including: high insulation values; double glazing; externally operable umbrella to maximize seasonal variations in passive solar radiation; locally and sustainably harvested Victorian hardwood with profiles that maximize timber yield; low VOC surfaces; formaldehyde-free plywood; collecting rainwater; hot water heating; compost and vegetable garden
